Nirvana Tickle

Speaker: Mr. Richard Rubacher

Date & Time:  September 7, B.E. 2551 (2008) – 12.00-13.30P.M.

About the Topic and Guest Speakers:

The Nirvana Tickle is about being alive JOYFULLY and HAPPILY (piti-sukkha). The concept came about after Richard’s “last lunch” as he prepared for his Vision Quest journey May 30-June 15 2008. Qualities displayed by the 36 ½ persons in the Cast of Characters include—being in a child’s mind, rapture, epiphany, a zany zest for life, enthusiasm, a sense of humor, paradoxical quivers and being “lost” in bliss. Having a flair for the outrageous is another characteristic. “Stupid happiness,” as defined by the Dalai Lama will be discussed.

The exotic mixture includes The Virgin (Joan of Arc), Sister Wendy Beckett (a consecrated virgin), A Professional Gambler and his autistic 6-year old son, Rumi, the Ganja Queen of Vietnam, Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, HH the 14th Dalai Lama, Oprah, Victor Frankl (a Nazi death camp survivor and founder of paradoxical intention) and Phra Mick, a former mobster-turned-monk who says Buddhism is a masterful con game. Others in the Cast are Marjoe the evangelical (this rascal proved that bad intentions can produce good results).  The ½ person will be identified. More luminaries are Dr. Alan B. Wallace (neuroscience researcher involved in the ‘biology of joy’), Mattieu Ricard (crowned the ‘happiest man on the planet’ by TIME magazine. There is a photo of him dressed as a bank robber. Seven Thai people, some of whom we know and…

As a graduate student Richard published research papers on “the Manhattan Project of the Mind.” His first presentation at WBU, “Hollywood & the Buddha” was in March 2008. His research paper, “Psychological Near-Death Experiences: the marriage of heaven & hell,” was presented to the International Association of Near-Death Studies at its Fifth Annual North American Conference at the University of Hartford, CT in 1997. He is the author of Thai Touch where the good and bad about Thailand are told with a comic touch. He appears on dharma radio talk shows and was interviewed by Thai monks on a dharma TV show in Bangkok. He was interviewed by the shock jock, Howard Stern. From 1975-1978 Richard was Charles Manson’s confidant.
