Who is the observer?

Is there a “me”? Old questions. Who is the observer? Who is watching the mind?

A man possessed strong focus in meditation. He saw a slow-moving orb which appears between his vision and the real world. He was skilled in sending the orb to read the minds of others. “I was proud of my meditaional skills” he said, until one day.. he finally noticed that the orb had manifestations, movements and lifespans of its own. It was not him. “There are no phenomena I can call me”.

The Blinds of Impermanence, Suffering & Non-self

– Energy cannot remain in one state. It must be spent.

– Stress and dissatisfaction arise – having to change postures a million times a day due to discomfort. Correcting one physical discomfort at a time.. endlessly. And the mental concoctions that follow.

– Experiencing dependent concoction of rising and falling, none can ever call their own.

Imagine an existence without a construct. Seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling nothing. Not even a blank screen. There is nothing to observe.. until data is fed to eye, ear, nose, tongue, touch , thought, memory & emotion. These data & their contents are not up to us. Once contact is made with the senses, curiosity, questions and all of our next thoughts & emotions are unknown to us. How curious, how smart, how many questions or answers arise aren’t up to us either. It’s the predestined spin of the slot machine. The next moments don’t belong to anyone. A once ‘very smart’ being can be suppressed down to a numb-vegetative state and stare blankly at any data without reaction. We’re not in control of our suppressions and limitations. Somethings maybe in control, but they too will be attempting to contain the continuous flux of chaos and will find the next moments aren’t up to them either. This mirrored effect is known as an ‘endless fractal-lock’.

So is there a SELF in these creations and collapses? Some of us view existence as simulations with three components. The hardware that is the body, the software that is the mind or the soul. Both combine to create a false self, and then there is the USER that is the true self. Other schools believe the USER does not exist at all. No one is observing the mind. The mind is watching itself.

Here is an equation that cannot be ignored: If the USER does not exist, one should despise Nefarious Universe and nothing we do matters. However, every prophet including the Buddha treated their disciples like pottery clay. There is always love. Every answer delivered with great skill, respect and care. Their intentions are purely to help, because there is someone there to help. The answer to whether the USER is real may be “it doesn’t matter”. The practice is still the same. The wise teacher needs to have one foot in Nefarious Universe and practice love.

One Response to “Who is the observer?”
